Feralsong: The Soundtrack
Two months ago, Heartsong came out. I haven’t spoken much on it, and probably won’t until after Brothersong comes out in August. The reason being is the decisions I made in that story directly tie into what comes next, and I don’t want to run the risk of spoiling anything. Just know that your confusion for the first 20% of the book before the truth came out and turned to fiery disbelief brought me much joy. Thanks!
Feralsong is a bridge, much like Lovesong was. You’ve actually already read a small part of it. When I revealed the Brothersong cover last summer, it had a bit from Carter’s point of view. The entire scene was from Brothersong, but was cut given that it didn’t really move the momentum forward. It takes place during the events of Ravensong, and shows what Carter and Kelly went through while Gordo was similarly trying to reach through to Mark as Omega insanity descended on them both.
I was fine with cutting it. The editor was right when she said it was slightly derivative, given that the connection between Kelly and Carter was already well established through the series, especially in Brothersong. I kept the scene, wondering if I could use it somewhere else. It wasn’t until I wanted to write another short that I decided to rework it into something different.
The story you’ll read on January 10 was originally over fifteen thousand words long, with four different perspectives: Carter, Kelly, Joe and Gavin. When I finished, I went back through it and realized I was giving too much away about the last book, that themes in Brothersong were leaking into Feralsong. I didn’t want to go too far, so I cut the story almost in half. What you’ll read next week is nine thousand words long, short and sweet but directly to the point, so much so that it cuts through to the heart of what these books are about.
I will say this about Brothersong: the book, while focusing on Carter and Gavin, is also about Carter and Kelly and Joe, princes who were never given a real choice about what they would mean to the world of wolves. Mangling Shakespeare to make a point: heavy is the head that wears the crown. If you could decide for yourself about who you wanted to be, what would you do? This was the big question at the forefront of my mind in writing Brothersong, and Feralsong is a precursor to the coming ending.
I’ve made a mini soundtrack for Feralsong, four songs, one for each of the guys. The songs are in narrative order, so you’ll know how the points of view coming, with a lyric or two showing why I picked the song.
Thanks for making this difficult year better than it had any right to be, and I can’t wait to show you why 2020 is going to rock your world.

CARTER
Find You // Ruelle
i’ll be the light and lead you home when there's nowhere left to go
i'll be the voice you always know when you're lost and all alone
i won't let you go
KELLY
Not Giving In // Tom Walker
'cause you gave away the love he gave you
you don't want a soul to save you
i’ll never stop, i'm not givin' in
'cause i'll climb the walls that slowly cage you
break the chains that you can't break through
i'll never stop, I'm not givin' in
JOE
Mars // Sleeping At Last
our questions ricochet
like broken satellites:
how our bodies, born to heal,
become so prone to die?
GAVIN
Howl // Florence + the Machine
if you could only see the beast you've made of me
i held it in but now it seems you've set it running free
the saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
i hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground
